What are the main uses of a battery when added to a solar system?

Batteries can offer several key benefits: 

•  Backup Power: Battery systems can be configured to provide partial- or whole-home backup power to help power your home during a grid outage.1

•  Use More of Your Solar Energy: Store and use your solar power when the sun isn’t shining − whether at night or during cloudy or stormy weather —  to reduce how much you need to rely on the grid. 

•  Time-of-Use Cost Reduction: If you live in an area where the price of electricity varies based time of day, like much of California, you can use the battery to store and use energy at times when utility rates are at their highest to help reduce your electric bill.  

1Never rely on your solar system, even if it includes a battery, to power life support or other medical devices.  

In general, solar systems without backup batteries are not permitted to generate energy during an outage, to protect utility employees who may be working on lines in the area from the electricity the solar system might put out into the local grid. However, solar systems with backup batteries add a layer of separation between the home solar system and the grid that allows panels to safely continue generating power and powering the battery in a blackout. This means that if your solar system includes a backup battery , the solar panels can continue powering your home and charging the battery even if the grid is down.  
If you use an EverBright PPA or lease for a solar with battery system, EverBright will maintain both the battery and solar panels at no additional cost for the entire contract term, which can be up to 25 years. This is longer than the typical battery manufacturer’s warranty of 10 years. As long as you are an EverBright customer with a solar with battery power-purchase agreement or lease, we will maintain, repair, and if necessary replace the battery .

With a PPA or lease, homeowners are not eligible for system-related tax credits and rebates. But because the system is part of an EverBright PPA, we can offer peace of mind by covering ongoing monitoring and support for the system, including any necessary service and repairs.
